Workers in the Offshore Oil Industry injured anywhere in the world, and most often in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, are generally covered under the Jones Act, the Longshore Act, the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, the Death on the High Seas Act and General Maritime Law. Depending on how a worker is classified (deckhand, roustabout, etc.), some or all of these laws will apply, often in combination with the laws of the adjoining or related state. More than a single defendant is generally involved in a typical offshore case allowing for a choice of courts in which to file litigation. Our team has litigated cases in a number of State and Federal courts, selecting the most favorable forum from the many choices available. Contact us and we will advise what law applies to you and where. For a more detailed look at how the various laws and offshore injuries relate to one another, refer to the Firm's recent Continuing Legal Education paper.
